On an Average Day

“A searing, often hilarious history of family disintegration…”

The inaugural production of the Route 66 Theatre Company, On an Average Day received huge critical acclaim during its March 2008 sold out run in Los Angeles garnering nominations for the L.A. Ovation Award and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award. Route 66 then loaded up the set and drove east along "the Mother Road" landing in Chicago at the Victory Gardens Theater. Our debut of this Chicago premiere was a "critic's pick" for the Chicago Tribune and several papers and received a Jeff nomination for Outstanding Fight Choreography. An emotionally harrowing yet subtly compassionate work, On an Average Day recalls the brutal family-dysfunction dramas of Sam Shepard coupled with the enigmatic subtext of Harold Pinter&rsquos works.

Both black comedy and psychological drama, On an Average Day tells the story of the emotional fog surrounding the relationship between two estranged brothers. Robert is clearly in desperate trouble and unraveling, just as his neat and controlled brother Jack arrives after a long absence. The piece evokes the tension of a mystery thriller though the lens of brutal family dysfunction.
